Highly infectious Covid-19 virus is upon us. Depending where you reside, you may have already started taking precautions for safety or quarantine. Indian government has announced, rightly so, a nationwide lockdown for 21 days limiting our daily exercise routine and food habits. This can make your diabetes condition a little more challenging to deal with.

However, you can maintain your diabetes by taking some extra precautions. All things are possible — it’s a matter of adapting, and maybe having a few hacks up your sleeve. I suggest the following:

  • 1. Make a routine: Working out at home in these times is obviously a good way to stay healthy and kill indoor time. Many online workout sources are offering free access or longer free trial periods during this time, which might be worth looking into. But again, anything that gets your heart pumping or builds muscle is great. The goal is to fit in a minimum of 60-90 minutes of physical activity every week. As venturing outdoors isn’t possible, choose indoor activities such as walking at balcony, yoga or working out with exercise videos.

  • 2. Take healthy diet: If your idea of getting through this quarantine means curling up on the couch and binge-watching your favourite series, take extra precautions to make sure the pounds don’t pile on. Extra snacking and a lack of physical activity can lead to weight gain, and would eventually effect your blood glucose leves.
    • • Reach for lower-calorie, lower-carb snacks such as cut-up raw veggies, pre-portioned snack bags of whole-grain items or nuts.
    • • Keep track of your food intake. Doing so can help you be more aware of what you’re putting in your mouth. There are plenty of free apps out there, including Wellthy or Healthify. Focus on making healthy food choices rather than reaching for high-carb, high-fat comfort foods.
  • 3. Manage your mood Some people find this lockdown and staying away from friends to be bit depressing. Symptoms include feeling anxious, being irritable, difficulty concentrating, feeling fatigued and losing interest in doing usual activities. Get plenty of sleep — but not too much. Aim for about 8 hours of sleep each night.

  • 4. More regular sugar monitoring: Any change in food choices can all impact your blood glucose and A1C levels. Keep up with regular blood sugar checks, and pay attention to trends (e.g., higher fasting or bedtime blood sugars).

  • 5. Stay hydrated: Make sure to drink plenty of non-caloric fluids; its best to keep a water bottle with you to remind you to drink.

During this lockdown period, please don’t step outside your home. Covid-19 is a highly infectious virus with high mortality rate. You can save your family and friends by JUST staying at home.

Let your endocrinologist or diabetologist know if your glucose levels are consistently outside of your target range. Apart from food and activity, you may need a medication adjustment. Any self-adjustment of medicine could be fatal. I am available on telephonic conversation and for emergency-only clinic visits.
